Towards gender-equitable and inclusive urban development ( transversal institutional strenghthening project

Summary


Community based monitoring (CBM)/citizen science activities are increasing and promise to transform quality of life. In order to support inclusiveness in CBM/citizen science require an approach that is context-specific and adaptive using community-based participatory research methods. Inclusiveness in education at all levels is of importance, and Universities have a role to play in promoting gender equality as stipulated in various international, regional and national conventions, programmes and policies. The sub-project aims at mainstreaming gender and community based participatory approach in training, research and outreach activities. The project apply threefold strategy and focus on numbers, content and organisational issues. At the project sites, an action research project on gender and community based monitoring/citizen science will be set up in which students, staff, communities and duty bearers will engage in joint research with an immediate societal and sustainable impact.

 

The following research topics are covered:


i)                    The community participatory research is linked to the dissertation of one master student at IOB Antwerp and one PhD student at UHasselt working on community based engagement linked to inclusive education.

ii)                   Gender and intersectionality issues at the university level is linked to the research project of one PhD and one master students enrolled  at the University of Dar es Salaam.

iii)                 Community based monitoring of gender based violence with participatory GIS in Bagamoyo District Council in the selected wards of Dunda, Magomeni and Nianjema. This research involves conducting baseline survey at household level, focus group discussions with community members and key informant interviews with duty bearers.


Pilot sites are Bagamoyo District Council in Coast region and Kinondoni municipal in Dar es Salaam region.


Two master students (one at the University of Dar es Salaam, & one at IOB Antwerp)  and two  PhD students have joined studies (one at University of Dar es Salaam & one at UHasselt)
